Introduction

The environment is the foundation of our lives, providing the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil we depend on for food. But not all communities have equal access to a clean and healthy environment. Environmental racism is the systemic discrimination of low-income and communities of color from toxic pollution, hazardous waste, and other environmental hazards. Environmental racism is not a new phenomenon, but it has gained more attention in recent years. This op-ed argues that consulting can provide solutions to stop environmental racism and create equity between the planet, people, and prosperity.

Environmental racism is a social justice issue that has been widely studied and documented. A report by the United Church of Christ Commission on Racial Justice in 1987 found that communities of color were disproportionately impacted by toxic waste sites. The study revealed that race was the most significant factor in predicting the location of hazardous waste sites, even after controlling for income, property values, and other demographic factors. Decades later, a 2021 report by the Environmental Protection Agency found that non-white populations were more likely to live near sources of air pollution.  Environmental racism not only poses a threat to public health but also undermines the economic and social well-being of affected communities. Toxic waste sites and other environmental hazards often lead to property devaluation, reduced economic opportunities, and disinvestment in affected areas. These impacts can be long-lasting, creating a cycle of poverty and environmental degradation that is difficult to break.

A Call to Action for Consulting Firms

Consulting can play a crucial role in addressing environmental racism. Consulting firms have the expertise, resources, and networks to help communities and businesses achieve sustainability goals that benefit people and the planet. Environmental consulting firms can assist in identifying and assessing environmental risks, developing strategies for reducing waste and emissions, and designing sustainable infrastructure. Community-based organizations and local governments can also partner with consulting firms to develop and implement environmental justice initiatives that promote equitable access to clean air, water, and soil.

In urban planning, consulting can help develop sustainable communities that promote equity between the planet, people, and prosperity. Urban planning can be used to address environmental racism by promoting the development of green spaces, bike paths, and pedestrian walkways in communities of color. It can also be used to promote access to public transportation and reduce the reliance on automobiles, which are major contributors to air pollution.

In industrial development, consulting can be used to promote environmentally responsible practices. Consulting can help businesses adopt sustainable manufacturing practices, reduce their use of natural resources, and reduce waste. Consulting can also be used to promote the use of renewable energy sources, which can reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions.

One successful example of consulting in action is the work of the environmental consulting firm, Skeo. The firm has worked with communities across the United States to develop and implement sustainable solutions that promote environmental justice. Skeo has helped communities develop brownfield remediation plans, create green infrastructure projects, and reduce carbon emissions. The firm has also worked with local governments to develop policies and programs that promote sustainability and equity.  Consulting firms have an opportunity to make a difference in the fight against environmental racism. However, it is important to note that consulting alone cannot solve the problem.

Conclusion

Environmental racism is a systemic issue that requires collective action from individuals, organizations, and governments. Consulting firms can play a role in creating awareness and advocating for policies and practices that promote environmental justice. As we face the impacts of climate change, we must acknowledge that we cannot continue to live in a world that perpetuates environmental racism. It is time for businesses and policymakers to take responsibility for their actions and implement sustainable solutions that promote equity between the planet, people, and prosperity. Let us work together to create a more just and sustainable world.
